DeVry Institute of Technology

The 14 DeVry campuses in the United States and Canada compose one of the largest private higher-education systems in North America. DeVry Institutes provide curricula in electronics technology, computer information systems, business operations, telecommunications management, accounting and technical management. Each program is designed to integrate general education, technology and business.

DeVry has its historical roots in the technical-school movement of the early 1900s. In 1931, Dr. Herman DeVry established DeForest Training School in Chicago to train students for technical work in electronics, motion pictures, radio and later television. The name was changed to DeVry Technical Institute in 1953, and it became the flagship of the current system of campuses. In 1968, the name was changed once again to DeVry Institute of Technology.

Currently, DeVry Campuses are located in Phoenix, Arizona; Long Beach and Pomona, California; Decatur, Georgia; Addison and Chicago, Illinois; Kansas City, Missouri; New Brunswick, New Jersey; Columbus, Ohio; Irving, Texas; Calgary, Alberta; North York, Scarborough and Missisauga.

The DeVry system has expanded in curriculum and degree offerings as well. In 1957, the DeVry Institutes achieved associate-degree granting status in electronics engineering technology and 12 years later were authorized to grant bachelor's degrees in the same discipline. Computer science for business (since renamed computer information systems) was introduced in 1979 as DeVry's second bachelor's degree program.

In response to a growing demand for professionals with business and technology expertise, DeVry introduced its bachelor's degree programs in accounting, business operations and telecommunications management in the 1980s. In 1994, DeVry launched its newest cirruculum, technical management. This degree-completion program is designed for individuals with technical associate degrees who seek a bachelor's degree.

In 1987, DeVry merged with Keller Graduate School of Management (KGSM), which offers master's degree programs in business administration, human resource management and project management. KGSM operates 17 sites in the United States in Atlanta, Chicago, Kansas City (Missouri), Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Phoenix and St. Louis. A center in the Washington, D.C., area is scheduled to open soon.

The merging of DeVry and KGSM brings together resources and expertise in management, business and technology in full- and part-time programs from the associate through the master's degree level.

The fall 1995 combined enrollment for DeVry's day and evening programs was more than 29,000 students.
